My Exclusive Camry Potting Bench

This car is twenty years old, so what's another scratch.

Still have to pot up those tomato cuttings and not shown
are two other candidates for division and repotting.

Spaghetti Squash Update

Don't be fooled by my Bee illustration above, a real
one is located underneath the illustration but only out
of focus and looking a lot worse than intended.

I tried to capture this busy bee who had all of these
blooms to visit, to show what a fortunate bee this must be.
Just weeks ago I had hundreds if not thousands of bees
in close proximity. I think if they stuck around these here
blooms would have been a great practice for the new bees...hint
hint.

Couldn't help wonder if this bee might have been left behind when
our colony of bees decided to move on.

Powdery Mildew is rearing it's ugly spottiness. Started to spray with a
watered down powdered milk in hopes to keepin it from getting much worse.
This is the first time using milk and it smells good, well like milk. I was
directed to spray this when the sun is out and didn't have any adverse
consequences.   The sun doesn't burn off the dew until after ten in the
morning which doesn't help matters along with the fact that this plant in
general is prone to powdery mildew. Needless to say not watering the leaves
will help to.

What's gardening without it's challenges.

80% Chance ... Is A Big Motivator

Last night's chance of rain motivated me into a lot of gardening
tasks. The past week I've been gathering up supplies needed that
were not on hand to complete these intentions. As the clouds
darkened the skies as predicted. Remember, 80% chance!

Imagining what could benefit from a nice sip of rain water.
But why stop there when we can add some of today's find
of Kelp liquid fertilizer. Yup, you heard it here. Hey, not only
can humans benefit from Kelp's nutrients. Why not make it
available to our plants.

If that wasn't enough, an expected package of rock dust, alleged
pulverized overburden left overs from a once active Glacier. This
product was ground down to the consistency of ground cinnamon.
Making it, in time more readily available and complimenting our
potted medium's bio mass.

Throw in a bag of composted material other than from my own.
We are adding more diversity of nutrients that normally would
be found locally. My own compost is in progress and got shot of
this trifecta of ingredients, which may be better at digesting these
foreign ingredients, as it morphs into some black gold.

An hour in my chair underneath my carport dividing pots of orchids,
ferns and repotting my Cacoa tree. The need to share this new bounty
of new ingredients is another motivating factor to all of the potted plants
that have managed to survive this solitary confinement existence.

A sip of Kelp a bite of compost. The only missing thing is, some rain.

Well the rain never came but what transpired in this time frame was
better than what could have fell out of the sky.

If only plants could talk.

Still A Beauty...Pulling this out of Draft Limbo

For most people I feel would warrant in cutting this driveway side
tree down. Bringing that day, should I witness it, when this tree
comes to either a natural disaster or by the hand of another and I
certainly hope, not mine.

This conjures up when I witnessed a sixty foot oak tree fall to it's
demise.

You may ask how did I know the height of this tree? When it's lying
across your neighbors front yard and knowing what that said length is
of said lot and with none to spare. It all comes together in a flash and
is something one does not easily forget.

As the door swings open as the strong gusts of winds buffet the door.
Ones natural tendencies is to grab said door, something only one would
do as adrenaline coursing through my veins.
The sight of the grass at the foot of the tree as the ground rolls up and
down, fluid and in sync as the tree rocks side to side. Looking like the
green artificial turf being put in place and easily taken up on a Putt Putt
gulf coarse, not static as you would think a lawn should be. The sounds
of the tree's vocal grown of defeat, the roaring of wind gusts. What is
one more noise as I contribute a roar of my own with intent and with
all respect, an Ohm, which by the way to my surprise and glee watched
this leviathan rest across my neighbor's yard.

The crescendo of tons of wet, perfectly viable arbor thunder
it's way to rest on an already saturated earth. Only to have had a
seismograph to bare such witness. Not knowing what small incremental
measurements it would to have registered such an event.

Jabba The Hut Reincarnate

This Toad knows how to take advantage and adapts quite well
with it's surroundings.

First Time Attempt At Growing Spaghetti Squash

Pot culture, assures constant attention and a needed water source,
provided by me and from above.

To early to tell whether this one will take. I even took the initiative to help
with the pollinating process in case nature comes up short.

If only our visiting bees we had two weeks ago only knew what was instore
for them.

Got hold of some liquid Kelp fertilizer today from Home Depot. Gave every
deserving plant life a sip. Not that there would be enough to go around, naturally
so I had to draw straws.

Who Knew...

Having come across this....
and this....
 Day two...

I suspect a pair of nesting Florida Trush. No pictures but eye witness them carting
off with an earthworm. Also witnessed one of them smack down a Cuban Anole lizard
several times , only to finish it off with a multiple hammer move that left the lizard
lifeless and suitable for baby's next meal. The eye witness was watching one of them
grabbing a pine bark and tossing it aside without concern or consideration of putting
it back where they found it. HA!

This must be the female, because the male has a bright cinnamon coloring. Both
have a speckled belly and long beak, ideal for poking around and under our mulch.

Landscape Transformation

Working with a friend in need to help transfer their yard into something to
be enjoyed, and transformed into a healing and not so typical Florida yard.

The above is a sample of what the world sees via Google Maps' Street View. Not
much different as of February when we took on this task. Typical and original builder's
landscaping still holding on through most typical Florida landscaping service's generic
15 min. trim and butch cut. Lack of any substantial tree coverage that it still years if
not decades away to help protect and green up this yard. Selecting some plantings more
suited to the site will help with this transformation.

After three phases and lots of digging and water to help get us through our natural
dry season, but unseasonable temperatures, assures us a good start. More than half
of these plants came from a surplus of plants from my yard, I might add. Diligent
watering and some original water engineering on the owner's part is inspiring in
itself.
We have one the most diverse landscaping on the block. When our rainy season
starts to give this yard it's blessing the owner can hopefully be inspired to continue
this transformation.

Perhaps needless to say, having a project to look forward to and take pride in over
flows in immeasurable ways.

Cacoa Tree Gets An Upgrade

Going on nearly two years next month this Prince gets
a pot upgrade. Pampered like a prince for it's privileged
and grace that it deserves in this world as only a Constant
Garden can only perceive.

Although we are midst of some record dry temperatures. This yard
would not have fared this well with out my tree cover. Let's hear
it for our urban forest.

Why only week ago I was told that this person I met at
our city's farmers market knows of one that raised a Cacoa
tree that lived in St. Petersberg, Fl. Although not far from
here but a bit warmer and with moist Gulf and Bay winds,
which the windy part of that is not the most favored of this
plant, is my understanding.

Using two new products in repotting this prince, including some ad-libbing.
Using a new potting soil that is more dense than I care for, therefor adding
some course Orchid mix to my simulated Central American jungle soil.

Although I'm keeping this potted specimen off the ground
to avoid any ground soil born critters to making residence.
I did find an earthworm in this root ball while transferring it
to it's new quarters.

Back to where it has done well these past couple of years.
Possibly one more size pot upgrade should hopefully do the
trick to get it make an effort to put forth a pod of Cacoa.

The Spelling Bees

For three days , I was spell bound by some bees in the
neighbor's tree. I first noticed them not by site but by
sound. The sound of them buzzing. So, I never heard
them in real life so my mind was taking it's time trying
to wrap around just what it was that I was hearing. It
wasn't until I heard the neighbor calling out to his coworker
something about bees, was it when I looked up and saw
several bees swarming around the neighbor's garage and
then to the source, a tree branch about twenty-five feet
above the garage roof.

Notified some neighbors to left themknow enough to keep their doors/garage doors shut should these
little guys decide to take up residence.

To get a better idea of the mass of bees, here is a blown out
zoom shot of our visitors conjuring their spell binding feat.

Day three of this phenomena we are left with a baseball sized honey comb.
Good thing they weren't all that serious in staying.

Looking back, I'm thinking it could have been more than three days that these
visitors were taking up residence here in our neighborhood. Not that I was
diligent in observing this colony 24/7. Every time I went to or from my back
door of my house did I take a gander to note any difference in activity. Out of
my three days of observation, it was only one day that they swarmed, otherwise
I might not of noticed them at all.

To my despair and perhaps some relief that they were gone only after a few days.

I even tracked down a once local bee keeper to try to get some insight. She was kind
enough to return my call after leaving a message.

Just yesterday I was able to speak to a bee keeper who was selling some honey.
I was told that perhaps these bees were on a quest to more hospitable enviroment
and this was just one of several stopping off points.
